Title: The Plex Project: Decentralized Metadata Search

Conference: O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference 2002

Type: Session

Duration: 45m

Audience Level: Entry

Audience Type: developers and users of emergent networks, P2P systems and
Web Services, Metadata Distribution, reputations, etc.

Preferred Date: Unknown as of yet

Description:
With the increasing popularity of decentralized systems, it's important to
create a system that will take care of some basics for developers, so that
they can focus on interesting apps. While people are building innovative
file sharing networks, they need a metadata search system to help people
find content. While people are creating new Web services, users need to know
where to find them. While people are creating community wireless networks,
they need to keep track of community reputations.

We'll present the problems with current systems, and how the Plex provides a
common solution that everyone can use. We'll explain how it works and
demonstrate how it can be used to solve common problems in some emerging
technologies, as well as open up new opportunities in collaboration and
application design.

By creating a platform for emergent networks to build on, and having
emergent network developers design it, we hope to create a powerful system
that can be used in many applications. We'll take a look at how the Plex can
expand similarly in the future by supporting a web of trust, file transfer
and distributed computing. We'll also discuss the possibility of an emergent
technologies consortium to do similar work for other technologies, like
open-air wireless nets, and geographic distribution.

Finally, we'll ask encourage interested parties to join our open project and
help bring it to the next level.

Description Short:
Do you have a great system, but don't know how to search it? Lots of web
services, but no way to find them? Looking for a decentralized platform for
the next great application? Come see how the Plex can help your project, and
remake the Internet in its original vision
